To work, to be entitled to social security, to join a university and many other benefits in the United States, you need to have your nine-digit Social Security Number.. This national identification document is similar to Brazil's RG number. In some cases, even foreigners living in the country need to issue it. After all, it's an important document that allows you to have guaranteed rights as a member of society.

American citizens, green card holders and temporary workers or students need to have a Social Security Number. Even those staying in the United States for a few monthsThis is the case with exchange programs that combine studying the language with working in the country (as a babysitter). Or even for university students who want to do some kind of internship or paid activity on campus.

Who can have it?

In conclusion, who can and should have the SSN are citizens who carry out any paid activity in the countrywhether they are Americans or people of other nationalities. It is also worth remembering that tourists or people who have a visa that does not allow them to work cannot apply for the SSN. This is because the Social Security Number is basically used to report an individual's salary to the government. It also guarantees the worker's social security benefits.

For those who want to do business and investing in the United StatesIf you have a Social Security Number but don't meet the qualifications for a Social Security Number, you can apply for an ITIN Number, issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

What is the ITIN?

The ITIN Number serves as a legal document that allows the bearer to receive payments in the USA that need to be declared to the country's tax authorities. As such, it can be issued by anyone, regardless of their immigration status, since it is through it that the Internal Revenue Service processes taxes and refunds for those who do not have an SSN.

What is the Social Security Number for?

As already mentioned, it is through this number that the inhabitants of the United States have their rights guaranteed (social security, for example). It is also the document used to identify citizens in everyday bureaucratic matters, such as income tax payments, as well as to control bank accounts, credit cards and credit score (score used to evaluate credit granting).

Credit Score

The Credit Score is a score that defines how reliable a person is when it comes to paying off their debts. It is through this score that a person can obtain credit for investments in the country, and the more debts that are made and paid on time, the higher the score.

For US citizens and green card holders, the Credit Score is issued using the SSN. In the case of investors with tourist visas and other categories who do not engage in paid activity, it can be issued using the ITIN Number.

Using the SSN

Just like the Brazilian CPF, the SSN is non-transferable. So if you take it out today to live temporarily in the US and come back years later, it's still valid and you don't need to issue it again.

It's also important to note that when applying for a position in a company you don't need to provide your SSN number, you just need to have it. Nor should you give out your nine-digit combination over the phone. Even when making a bank transaction, only the last 4 digits are required. Take good care of your SSN card and don't give it out improperly.

How do I apply for a Social Security Number?

The process of getting your Social Security Number is a bureaucracy that takes a long time. You should therefore apply as soon as possible. To do this, you need to fill in an online form at Social Security website. After this process face-to-face stage at the local Social Security Administration office

This is when the required supporting documents are taken. These include authorization to engage in gainful employment. The SSN then arrives at the address provided by the citizen at the start of the process.

However, if you're still in Brazil, you can start the process of withdrawing this document. All you need to do is fill in the application together with the seen. This way, you don't have to go to the Social Security office in the United States.

It's important to note that, despite being an official document, the SSN is not valid as a universal identification document. Since it doesn't contain a photograph or fingerprints.
