In the old part of the city, the houses and land are very spacious, as well as the farms with plantations. It has such a rural profile, that it is even common to find chickens roaming free in this area.

In the new part there are more modern houses of different sizes and typologies. There are also gated communities and new constructions with an excellent structure.

The University of Central Florida campus has attracted young people, which has forced the city to reinvent itself. Little by little, Oviedo is gaining residents, expanding commerce, and leisure options. It is a region that is constantly growing

Oviedo History

The land now known as Oviedo was once inhabited by the Timucua Indians, one of the Native American clans. Today there is no longer any remnant of the tribe's tradition in the city, but it is always referenced as an important part of the region's history.

At another time in history, Oviedo became a refuge for immigrants, mainly from Sweden. But it was especially after the Civil War that Oviedo's population grew, as it did throughout Florida, since it was a defining historical moment for the country. The soldiers who participated in the war, when retiring, were looking for a place that would allow for a more tranquil lifestyle. Another important factor for the development of the town is that at this time it was still possible to buy lots at very low prices.

Its fertile land also attracted celery and citrus growers and was the town's major source of income. At first it was called the Lake Jesup Community, and this small community lived from farming by selling the goods transported to other communities by boat. This was the main means of transportation at the time, as the roads connecting the town to Orlando and Sanford - which were the closest - were very precarious.

With the popularization of the boat, a post office was also created. The man responsible for delivering the mail by boat was the Swede Andrew Aulin. As he became very well known, he was invited to name the agency. He chose the name Oviedo in honor of the large Spanish community in the region. Years later, the residents decided to change the old name Lake Jesup Community and chose the name that remains today.

Florida's Oviedo refers to the Spanish city, founded in the 8th century.
