Oviedo is a small town on the outskirts of Orlando, in Seminole County. It has the same name as the Spanish city, because there was a time when Spaniards were very much represented there. Today, foreigners are a minority in the region. The profile of those who choose to live in Oviedo is that of those who want to live away from the hustle and bustle of tourist cities, without sacrificing quality of life.
Oviedo is on the shores of Lake Jesu. Despite being a more rural region, the people who live there have a higher income. The average price of a house in the area is US$ 301 thousand. In the old part of town, the houses and plots of land are very spacious, as are the farms with plantations. It has such a rural profile that it's even common to find chickens running loose in the area.
In the new part, there are more modern houses of different sizes and types. There are also gated communities and new buildings with an excellent structure.
History of Oviedo
The land now known as Oviedo was once inhabited by the Timucua Indians, one of the Native American clans. Today there is no longer any trace of the tribe's tradition in the city, but it is always referred to as an important part of the region's history.
At another time in history, Oviedo became a refuge for immigrants, mainly from Sweden. But it was especially after the Civil War that Oviedo's population grew, as it did throughout Florida, as it was a remarkable historical moment for the country. When the soldiers who took part in the war retired, they were looking for a place that would allow them to lead a more peaceful lifestyle. Another important factor in the city's development was that at that time it was still possible to buy plots at very low prices.
Its fertile land also attracted celery and citrus growers and was the town's main source of income. At first it was called the Lake Jesup Community, and this small community made its living from agriculture, selling goods to other communities by boat. This was the main means of transportation at the time, since the roads linking the city to Orlando and Sanford - which were the closest - were very precarious.
With the popularization of the boat, a post office was also set up. The man responsible for delivering the mail by boat was the Swede Andrew Aulin. As he became very well known, he was invited to name the agency. He chose the name Oviedo in honor of the large Spanish community in the area. Years later, the residents decided to change the old name of the Lake Jesup Community and chose the one that still stands today.
Oviedo in Florida is a reference to the Spanish city founded in the 8th century.
